I absolutely love when I get the chance to photograph lifestyle newborn sessions. There’s just something so powerful about capturing a new baby at home with their parents, in the very place they’ll grow and develop. All newborn sessions are amazing – but I just personally love lifestyle newborn photos! Not only are they extra meaningful, but they’re less stressful for new parents (I’ll talk about that more in a minute!). When you bring a new baby home, I promise you: you’ll want to keep things easy on yourself. This little guy couldn’t wait to get to know his parents and he arrived several weeks before his due date. Understandably, his parents were a bit worried but everything turned out to be okay. Now he’s home with them, and they’re settling into life as a trio. When I arrived, he wasn’t so sure about having his photos taken and was a bit fussy for us. But, that’s okay! Babies need to be babies. We were able to get him calmed down and he was an absolute sweetheart for the rest of our session together. He loved getting to snuggle with his mom and dad throughout their photos – and swaddling definitely helped keep him calm, too.
As a mom and a newborn photographer for many years now, I know lots of tips to help keep baby calm while we’re capturing your lifestyle session. The biggest advice I can share? Don’t stress about it! I have my own kids and I’ve photographed many more babies, too. I want them to be able to feel safe and content – so whether that means we need to change outfits, rooms, let them feed or rest, that’s all okay with me. My sessions are definitely led by the baby (and older siblings when they’re involved!). That’s one of the reasons I love newborn photos at home – everything you might need is on hand. There’s no worrying about whether or not you grabbed clean diapers, an extra outfit, or even your own makeup. All of it’s there and you can just relax, enjoying this special time as a new family!
